To still be pumping iron at the age of 88 is quite remarkable. Hamish McPherson started to workout in the gym in his early forties. The reason for this was his wife had passed away and he wanted something to help him overcome his grief.
It was to be a life changing moment when he walked through our door at Bolton Health Studio in the early seventies. Since that time the grocery store owner has kept fit, run marathons and generally handled life with vigour, determination and an unbelievable resilience.
We happened to meet this week in town and had a coffee. He said, ‘it was a life saver, not only did I have a lifetime of exercise and fitness, but I made so many friends – it really did change my life.’ Hamish still lifts weights, but mostly on machines these days. I never miss Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
My former member, running and training companion and friend epitomises everything our industry is about. Great people with inspiring stories and making friends. I salute everyone who makes something out of a setback and lives to tell the story.
