A Rare Commodity

Good managers are hard to come by. Management Excellence is an even more rare commodity.

It is estimated it takes 18 years at senior level to achieve that defining status. In a study called the development of talent at Northwest University a Dr Benjamin Bloom scrutinised the careers of Sculptors, Mathematicians, Swimmers, Musicians, Neurologists and senior people across all disciplines - the outcome was 17.4 years.

The business guru Tom Peters and author of ‘In Search of Excellence’ explained it like this ‘ The definition of excellence in leadership is the person who is completely there for you.’

A top managers work is 99% hidden. The work behind the scenes to be completely behind everyone is not just a labour of love but a lifetime of dedication and management. Thinker and writer John Adair has these 7 rules of success:

1) Admit to mistakes

2) I am proud of you

3) What is your opinion?

4) If you please

5) Think You

6) We

7) And least important the word ‘I’
